La Verde — 32 Years and Counting

Bolivia last played in a FIFA World Cup in 1994 in the USA — when La Verde qualified from CONMEBOL and faced Germany, South Korea and Spain in Group D. Now, 32 years later, they're in IC Playoff 2 and just two wins away from writing history. Beat Iraq and Suriname — and they're back on the biggest stage of all.

6 Key Storylines

🏔️

From the Roof of the World to North America

Bolivia play home CONMEBOL qualifiers at La Paz — 3,600 metres above sea level. The thin air has toppled Argentina (0-6 Bolivia in 2009) and Brazil alike. Now La Verde take their mountain-hardened legs to sea-level North America for the IC Playoff stage.

👑

Marcelo Moreno Martins — La Verde's All-Time Legend

Bolivia's all-time top scorer defined a generation of Bolivian football. Moreno Martins dragged La Verde through CONMEBOL qualification campaigns with sheer force of will. His legacy looms over every Bolivian WC campaign — now the next generation carries that torch.

🎯

IC Playoff 2 — Two Wins from History

Bolivia face Iraq (AFC) and Suriname (CONCACAF) in the IC Playoff 2 mini-tournament. Win both and they're in Group I against France, Senegal and Haaland's Norway. It's a brutal path — but it's Bolivia's path. CONMEBOL grit vs the world.

⏳

32 Years — The Longest Wait in South America

No CONMEBOL team has gone longer without a World Cup appearance than Bolivia. Since 1994 in the USA — the last time Bolivia played on US soil at the World Cup — a generation of fans has been waiting. The 2026 hosts are the same host: USA. The poetic return awaits.

🇫🇷

Group I Mountain — France, Norway, Senegal

If Bolivia win IC Playoff 2, they draw into Group I: defending runners-up France (Mbappé), Erling Haaland's Norway, and AFCON champions Senegal. It's the toughest possible draw — but in football, stranger upsets have happened. Ask Italy 1974.

1994 Memories — Coming Back 32 Years Later

Bolivia's 1994 campaign on US soil was their last WC appearance. Playing Germany, South Korea and Spain in Group D, La Verde showed South American heart. Now, in 2026, the USA hosts again. Bolivia have the chance to close the circle — 32 years of qualifying heartbreak ending where it began.
